Family Vacations: The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
New Mexicos biggest city hosts the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta every October, a premiere event for hot air balloon aficionados from around the world. While this is just one of the citys many draws for visitors, it is one of the biggest.
The event started in a parking lot in 1972. Today, more than 700 hot air balloons take flight at the yearly festival, providing airborne entertainment to several hundred thousand attendees. Events at the Balloon Fiesta include Dawn Patrols coordinated predawn balloon liftoffs which, on certain days, are choreographed to music.
A gaseous endurance test pits several Gas Balloons which can stay in the air for more than two full days against each other to see which one can travel farthest before literally running out of gas. There are also special nighttime Balloon Glows during which balloonists fire up their burners and light up the night sky. A similar event, the Special Shape Glowdeo, features irregularly shaped balloons.
The highlight of the Balloon Fiesta is the Mass Ascension, where all participating balloons take to the sky. Taking place four times over the course of the 10day event, balloons launch in two waves, beginning just past 7:00 a.m. On several nights, fireworks close out the days events.
Albuquerque has many other family attractions beyond the Balloon Fiesta. Among them, Albuquerque Biological Park consists of Albuquerque Aquarium, the Rio Grande Botanic Garden, the Rio Grande Zoo, and Tingley Beach.
The Aquarium explores all the Rio Grande Rivers habitats between Albuquerque and the Gulf of Mexico; the Zoo has more than 250 animal species; and Tingley Beach is an al p urpose recreation center, with three lakes for fishing, a model boat pond, as well as bicycles and pedal boats you can rent.
Thrill seekers can take a ride on the Sandia Peak Tramway, which, at almost 15,000 feet in length, is the worlds longest passenger aerial tramway. For a little indoor fun, check out the Hinkle Family Fun Center, an entertainment hub featuring arcades, bumper boats, bumper cars, gokarts, miniature golf, lazer tag, and paintball.
Beyond Albuquerque, the region is full of daytrip possibilities. In the Los Alamos area, the Ancient Ruins Loop is a series of ancient cliff dwellings. If you are heading to the state capital, consider taking the Turquoise Trail, a scenic byway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
The cities of Santa Fe, Taos, and Carlsbad are all worth a visit Santa Fe for its distinctive architecture; Taos for its art scene; and Carlsbad for its bewitching high desert landscape.

Does it have to do with a hot air balloon festival. Like the Midwest Skyfest , the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Balloons over Niagara, and Balloons at the park, just to name a few. I think that it would be cool to name it something like Heaven bound ride or Ride to Heaven. Who knows it could be anything.
When my dad passed away in April 2004 with cancer, my two brothers, my mom, my husband and I were in his nursing home room with him along with His best friend Dave and his wife Sherry. He was surrounded by people who loved him very much. After dad passed away the lights on the dashboard of my youngest brother’ , Kevin’s, car came on. The car was old and the lights on the dashboard never worked while he owned the car. My dad was an auto body repairmen, he loved cars and was always fixing things. So when my brother saw the dashboard light come on in his car he knew it was a sign from my dad. The lights on the dashboard worked for two weeks after my dad passed.The morning dad passed away the song “Beautiful Balloon” came on the radio. I took is as a communication from dad. He and I used to get up early on October mornings and go watch the Hot air balloons go up and fly in the skies of Albuquerque. He loved the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta because it always fell around his birthday on the 10th of October. The “Beautiful Balloon” was a song I had not heard in ages and it wasn’t played on and Oldies radio station, which I thought was really odd. I heard the song once in a while over the next three or four months. Then the stations stopped playing it.The day after my dad passed away, my other brother Karl had a dream with my dad in which he told him to tell my mom that he was ok.My mom one day, a while after dad passed, was playing scrabble. She liked to play scrabble by herself to pass time. She told me one time that she was playing her game of scrabble and she drew seven letters out of the letter bag and when she put them on her little letter holder they spelled out LOVE U EDD.She had been missing him incredibly and he let her know that he was there. Isn’t that incredible!While my dad was sick he to told my mom that he wanted her to find love again after he passed. She didn’t want to hear it at the time because he was her first and only love. Now, I am happy to say that she has found someone and they are getting married at the end of May.
