Ugghh… I feel your pain, bro. I drove my ass all the way down to the Statesville, NC municipal airport to photograph a hot air balloon festival, only to have the whole show shut down on account of inclement weather. For some stupid reason, this annual National Balloon Rally (to which balloonists travel from the far reaches of the US) is paired with a wine “festival” -the unlikeliest combination of themes in the unlikeliest redneck backwater east of Nashville.

And, while the idea of a wine tasting affair might trick you into thinking this was some sort of sophisticated affair, it basically boiled down to -as you described- a “midway” atmosphere of local wine geeks selling utterly useless, tacky craft garbage from the wind-battered tents they were brilliant enough to set up on this airport's ***STILL ACTIVE*** runway :-O

I shit you negative, there were planes landing on the same fucking runway we were strolling around on -you could almost reach up and touch their underbellies as they glided in on approach. So much for homeland security

Sadly, there was no cotton candy to be had, but there was plenty of funnel cake, fried curly-potatoes (which is basically nothing but a vehicle for scalding hot lard and salt), fried snickers bars and fried Hostess Twinkies. What the hell is wrong with the South, that everything has to be fried? No wonder we have an obesity epidemic in this country!
