The easiest way to answer your Frappuccino question is to explain first how they're made. Unlike Lattes, Frappuccinos don't have all of their ingredients put in fresh as you order it.

A Frappuccino has three main parts: The Base (this is the main substance of the drink, and is the part that has coffee in it, unless you order a Creme Frappuccino… but I'll explain that later.)

Like I said, the base is the main substance of the drink. The base contains the milk, sweetener, and coffee. The base isn't made fresh in the store– it's made wayyyy back at the "factory" if you will. At the store two parts of the base are put together, and then refrigerated. Since the base contains the milk, sugar and coffee, it's not possible to, say, make it with skim milk and no sugar. Nor is it possible to make it with half & half, extra sugar and decaf. The regular base has a good amount of fat and sugar– for example, a grande (medium) coffee frappuccino (this is just the base and ice– no flavoring), has 240 calories WITHOUT whipped cream.

However, since some people want less calories, Starbucks does have a LIGHT base. Again, this base is made way before it reaches the store, so this cannot be modified either. The base itself contains skim milk, sucralose (the chemical name for Splenda), and coffee. A grande coffee frappuccino LIGHT has only 130 calories without whipped cream (again, this is versus the 240 calories of a normal coffee frappuccino.) The light frappuccino definitely still has sugar in it– just much less than the regular one.

Now, onto the flavoring. Some Frappuccinos are flavored a little different than espresso drinks. For example, if you order a Vanilla Latte, it will be made with Vanilla SYRUP (which is also available in sugar-free.) If you order a Vanilla Frappuccino, however, it will be made with a Vanilla Bean powder, instead of a syrup. This powder is NOT available sugar-free.

If you do order a Caramel, Mocha or White Mocha Frappuccino, these are made with the normal syrup/sauce. Caramel is available sugar-free, and you can ask that it be sugar-free in your Frappuccino, but Mocha and White Mocha are NOT available sugar-free. The cool thing with frappuccinos is that they use much less syrup/sauce than lattes, so even though you can't get all of them sugar-free, there's less added anyways.

So, to answer your EXACT question about Frappuccinos, if you order it "light", that does not mean sugar-free syrup. You need to request sugar-free syrup (only available for Caramel Frappuccinos and Cinnamon Dolce Frappuccinos.)

Frappuccinos are the only drink you can order "light" and actually make sense in doing so. You can, however, order hot and iced espresso drinks "skinny." Ordering these drinks skinny means they are completely nonfat, completely sugar-free (well, aside from natural sugar in milk), and no whipped cream.

Blended Creme Frappuccinos are NOT available light. Incase it wasn't obvious by the name difference, too, Creme Frappuccinos do NOT have coffee in them– just so you know.

The sugar-free syrups available (in the U.S., at least) are Caramel, Vanilla, Hazelnut and Cinnamon Dolce.
