Over London

Stopping over in london(heathrow) for 6 hours,is it worth leaving the airport?
Going from canada to the middle east and we are stopping over in london for about 5 hours.
We have british passports(haven't been to england since 2001 though)so we won't need a visa I assume but would it be worth leaving the airport and doing some sight seeing?
Is there enough time?
The fastest way is to get the Heathrow Express to Paddington which is about 30 minutes then its another 30-45 minutes by tube to any of the sights like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, etc. So say at least an hour travel time each way and that's only if all of your trains are back to back (you will probably have to change tube lines at least once I don't think there is a direct one). Plus you have to remember you will have to clear security again so give yourself at least another hour in a big airport like Heathrow. And you usually have to be at the gate 45-60 minutes before scheduled departure. So unless you want to spend a few hours on the train and tube only to hop off for a few minutes to have a look at the outside of Westminster Palace (Big Ben) and Westminster Abbey and rush back to the airport and hope you clear security in time for you flight then the answer is no.

Views Over London and Landing at Heathrow Airport
What are the best spots to be in London over the next 3 weeks?
My son and myself are planning to holiday in London and thereafter in Paris from 24th June onwards for about 3 weeks and want to really have fun. Any ideas? Will thank each good idea personally !
I love History and London has lots of it!
Go to see the Tower of London and see the crown jewels.
Visit Westminster Abbey and St Paul's cathedral. Take a walk at Trafalgar square, drive past Piccadilly circus and recognize the scene in many movies on London. Take a ride on the double decked bus. Visit Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum and the London Museum. Visit the London zoo. Watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham palace. Go to Harrod's department store and shop, if you can afford it, or browse. Eat some Chinese food in their Chinatown -Soho. Hope this helps.

“Phil. says: May 17, 2010 at 6:57 amStacey says:May 17, 2010 at 5:33 amBA chief executive Mr Walsh said: “I am very concerned that we have decisions on opening and closing of airports based on a theoretical model.“There was no evidence of ash in the skies over London today yet Heathrow was closed.”He added that airlines flew safely in other parts of the world where there was volcanic activity, saying: “If we can do it in every other part of the world, I can assure you we can do it in the UK as Walsh clearly does not understand how good the models are which the Met Office produce and which are clearly capable of making extremely accurate weather and climate predictions.Just because there was no volcanic ash over London does not mean that the models are wrong? He must have missed the satellite images showing a cloud of ash over the UK, including Heathrow! (EUMETSAT)They’re not opening and closing based on theoretical models, it’s based on actual observations.”You make the mistake of thinking it’s a visible ash cloud i.e. the sort you should avoid. If you read the EUMETSAT site it talks of satellite sensors and software. They are just ‘images’ of slight traces. I live in the south of England and there is no ash cloud. If it wasn’t for the super duper technology we wouldn’t even know it was there.Go look at ‘vis 0.6′ /color/ western europe and show me the cloud? You are looking at RGB composites which are enhanced and computerised.cheers David
american football now thats a sport..lol jk
a) This is a humor site, not the news. b) No one actually did say “I think there's some ash over London LOL” so I think you can pull THAT particular stick outta your bum. c) The question of “What are they talking about” pertains primarily to Simon Pegg's oblique reference to the John Cusack film “2012″ in the tweet, not the volcanic eruption in Iceland. d)Glad to know you'd cut the Aussie some slack (I'm sure they'll take you up on that) but to hell with the Americans and THEIR stupidity. e) What did Barak Obama do to YOU? And what's with the “Long Legged Mack Daddy” snipe? I'm thinking that reveals perhaps more of your character than you intended. After all, how many black leaders do the Europeans have? f) Sorry for the interruption to your life. This however is what is called “an act of God”. Modern life is constructed out of some very thin tissues. It's amazing to think that something as old as the Earth can so efficiently bring so much of our modern world to a stop. Virtually all of the West coast of America (North, Central, and South) is apart of the Ring Of Fire, active and “inactive” volcanoes surround the Pacific ocean. If any of them go, it won't be pretty. Which leads me to -g) So far air travel has been primarily effected. I have as yet to hear of anyone dying, so mostly it's making air travel difficult-it could be much worse. h) Americans do not have a lock on the “ugly”. The British and the Europeans can be just as bad, as I think your rant shows. It almost sounds as if you hold the U.S. responsible for an natural occurance.
Should be given to the most needy, ie charities, esp for children, and the nxt into our hospitals and esp the staff, nurses etc, and for children in war torn areas worldwide, lets face it we have lived our life, but these innocent children need something to live for, surely we can do tht much for them give them the security, help and love.
lol, star
Got quite excited by the proposed 250mph rail link proposed from Leeds to London until I realised I'll be over 60 by the time it completes!
Unfortunately, I haven’t been to Disneyland since I was about 10 yrs old (which is longer ago than I care to admit) so I haven’t experienced some of the rides on this list. However, I have to agree with Space Mtn, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, The Haunted Mansion and Small World. I would have to add Peter Pan to my own list; not for the thrills, just the nostalgia. Loved flying over London!
Wow, I knew some people were blinkered about world events, but DAMN
There's a goddamn volcano (and quite possibly a second any day now) letting loose about the same distance from the US shores as the UK, that's *completely* – and I cannot emphasise this strongly enough, COMPLETELY shut down air traffic across, in and out of almost an entire* continent (including stopping a metric f***ton of flights in and out of the US – I was at a seminar last week led by some Californians who weren't entirely sure when they were going to get home, and moreover Barack Ob… sorry, Mr Long Legged Mack Daddy, has had to cry off going to the funeral of the entire Polish cabinet after that “inverse Debt Of Honour” thing), an unprecedented event that's never happened before on anything like this scale in the history of aviation, and it's been going almost a week now…
and the response… “What's he talking about?” “I think there's some ash over London, lol”
How the hell can you not have heard of this? Jesus FC on a moped.
If the wind had been blowing southwest instead of southeast we'd probably never hear the goddamn end of it and a global state of emergency would be declared.
(* OK… the Spanish have reopened a couple of their more southerly airports and are offering to help pipe EVERYONE who's stranded somewhere off the mainland through them and onto ground-based forms of transport, but that's pretty much it. It's kinda eerie really – I live under a flightpath, for a start…)
Sorry for assuming a certain nationality here, but… yknow. The laws of probability are on my side. If you actually happen to be antipodean or something, then I can maybe let you off with a stern warning given that anyone grounded by this event who was headed your way may not be officially “late” yet…
