Bungee jumping?

Belinda Stronach bungee jumps from the basket of a hot air balloon (at a fixed altitude of 57 m) and wishes, on her first bounce, to come within exactly 2.0 m of the ground, to strike a surprise blow on Tie Domi, who is standing directly below. In an earlier experiment she found that a 5.0 m length of bungee cord (manufacted by Magna) stretches by 1.5 m under her weight. What length, L, of bungee cord should she use? Answer in m.

The answer is 26 m but how?

hooke's law state F=-kx
let mass of woman=m, acceleration due to gravity=g
in test x=1.5 and F=mg (from F=ma, newton 2)
=> mg=-(k*5)*1.5
(we use k*5 because there are 5 meters of cord and k is newtons per unit length)
=> -k=(mg)/7.5 (1)

At the bottom of the first bounce the Potential energy stored in the cord must equal the potential energy difference between woman in the balloon and at the bottom of the bounce.

PE=mgh=55*mg (h=57-2=55)

U=(kx^2)/2 (2) (potential energy stored in a linear spring)

substituting (1) into (2) gives

U=(mgx^2)/15
since PE=U (at the bottome of the first bounce)
=> (mgx^2)/15=55*mg (note mg terms cancel)

=>x^2=55*15=825
=>x=29 meters (to two sig fig)

let L be unstreched length of cord

L=55-x (55 being the streched length and x obviously the extension)

=>L=55-29= 26 meters
