Asst Hot Air
Issue with the heat in my car? 2005 Dodge Stratus...?
2005 Dodge Stratus 4door 2.7L V6.
For some reason the air does not get hot (when I have the heat on) until I put the car in drive and start accelerating. If I get to a stop light the air gets cold again. As long as I am in motion its fine...Any ideas on what is the issue, how much, and can I do it on my own...?
Thanks again for the asst.
Bobbo
Low coolant level would be the most likely cause. Make sure the cooling system is full and free of air.
I've also seen a weak water pump cause theat symptom on the 2.7L several times.
Best of Luck!

Forgot to mention I have about 150,900 miles on it...
yeah, certified dealer means big money, and "oh and we found this wrong, that wrong, and this has gone bad" which means even more money....I work for a living, I have no money....
The air gets hot just not when I am moving...my guess was the blower....
Sounds like the radiator is low on coolant. Let the engine cool down with the hood open. Then remove the radiator cap, if it is low, then you found the problem. When you accelerate, the water pump forces the coolant through the cars heater core and gives you the hot air you are looking for, when you are at an idle, there is not enough pressure to push the coolant through the core because you are low on coolant. Now, if you are low, then you have another problem. It is leaking from somewhre, because coolant does not evaporate. Check the hoses to see if you see any drops or stains, if not, then check the water pump area. With 151k on the engine, i am sure the water pump is beginning to fail you. You need to service the coolant by flushing and changing the coolant at least every 30k and then add a water pump lubricant into the cooling system. This will keep the bearing and the seal in the pump lubricated and extend the life of your pump and cooling system. preventive maintenance is key. Change all fluids regularly, oil filters and coolant is the lifeline to your engine, otherwise they will fail and always when you least expect it. Now with the cooler weather headed this way, these engine problems are common.
good luck......
